Marvel Lands Doctor Strange Director

Doctor Strange has been on the horizon of Marvel's Cinematic Universe for some time now. Recently in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Strange even got a name drop from Agent Sitwell. It now seems that a Doctor Strange movie is closer than ever.

Variety reports that Marvel is close to agreeing to a contract with Scott Derrickson to direct the Doctor Strange movie. Marvel has yet to make any official announcement. Scott Derrickson is a unique choice to direct as he as mainly directed movies in the horror genre. He was the director and writer for The Exorcism of Emily RoseSinister, and Deliver Us from Evil which comes out later this year. He also was the director on The Day the Earth Stood Still

Derrickson should be able to deliver a whole new look and feel to the Marvel universe if he approaches a Doctor Strange movie the same way. Doctor Strange was a surgeon before a car accident crushed his hands. He studied under the Ancient One where he learned to develop magic abilities. The world of magic is a dark and creepy one, which makes Derrickson's background perfect.

UPDATE: Scott Derrickson took to twitter to confirm the news along with this selfie

No news of a release date or lead actor have been announced yet, but that shouldn't last long. The San Diego Comic-Con is from July 24-27 and would seem to be an ideal time to announce more on this movie. The likely release date for the movie would be July 8, 2016 which is only a few months after Captain America 3. While no official casting news is out there, actors often mentioned with this movie are- Johnny Depp, Jon Hamm, and Orlando Bloom.
