Steve Rogers was a scrawny man until he joined the army and became the first super soldier during World War II. He defeated the Red Skull but had to crash a plane full of bombs into the arctic to save the world. He was presumed dead but was found by SHIELD over 60 years later. He joined the Avengers and as Captain America, he is the leader of the team. He helped take down HYDRA after they took over SHIELD and set out to find his brainwashed friend Bucky.
Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow)- Played by Scarlett Johansson

Natasha Romanoff was trained as a young girl to become an assassin by the Black Widow program. She built a dark reputation and SHIELD sent Hawkeye to kill her, but he decided to recruit her instead. She became a member of the Avengers when they were formed and continued to work for SHIELD, until it fell. Now she is hiding after her many secret identities were compromised.

Nick Fury was a soldier in his younger days and worked his way up to becoming the director of SHIELD. He was behind the Avengers Initiative and formed a team of Earth's mightiest heroes. He faked his own death when HYDRA took over SHIELD and has gone his own way to take down what remains of HYDRA. He appointed Phil Coulson the new director of SHIELD and gave him all the information he would need to rebuild the secret organization.
Sam Wilson (Falcon)- Played by Anthony Mackie

Sam Wilson was a paratrooper in the military and specialized in using a high tech flight suit. The program was shut down and he decided to spend his time helping veterans get re-acclimated to the world. He helped Captain America take down HYDRA and is helping him destroy what remains of the organization.
Maria Hill- Played by Cobie Smulders

Maria Hill was Nick Fury's second in command while he ran SHIELD. She was not supportive of his decisions at first but eventually came to understand and trust him. Following SHIELD's collapse, she began working for Tony Stark at Stark Industries.
James "Bucky" Barnes (Winter Soldier)- Played by Sebastian Stan

Bucky joined the 107th during World War II but was captured by the Red Skull during an attack. Steve infiltrated the base and found his best friend strapped to an operation chair but was able to rescue him. He ends up getting blown out of a train and down the side of a cliff. He was assumed to be dead but was captured by HYDRA. They brainwashed him and turned him into the Winter Soldier. He was responsible for countless assassinations, including Tony Stark's parents, but has started to regain his old memories.
Sharon Carter (Agent 13)- Played by Emily VanCamp

Sharon Carter lived across the hall from Steve Rogers. Just like her aunt, Peggy, she caught the eye of the superhero. She was assigned to watch over Rogers under Fury's orders and stayed loyal to both when HYDRA took over SHIELD. She has since joined the CIA.
Brock Rumlow (Crossbones)- Played by Frank Grillo

Rumlow was a double agent working for SHIELD but who followed HYDRA's orders. He is highly skilled in combat and lead the STRIKE force. He got into a fight with Falcon that left him in critical condition in the hospital but he is expected to make a full recovery and seek vengeance.
Peggy Carter- Played by Hayley Atwell

Peggy Carter was in the army when Steve Rogers was recruited for the super soldier program. They formed an unlikely bond and became very close in a short span of time. She was heartbroken when he crashed the Red Skulls ship to save the world and had to move on. She joined the SSR and was overlooked as she tried to clear Howard Stark's name. She is currently dealing with a variety of health problems and is on her death bed.
Batroc the Leaper- Played by Georges St. Pierre

Batroc is a highly skilled fighter and a mercenary. He helped HYDRA briefly but was stopped by Captain America. He was taken into custody by SHIELD but was likely released by Alexander Pierce when he and HYDRA took over.
Johann Schmidt (Red Skull)- Played by Hugo Weaving
- Appeared In
- Captain America: The First Avenger
Johann Schmidt was given an early version of the super soldier serum developed by Abraham Erskine. The serum was not perfected and turned him into the Red Skull. He stole the Tesseract and wanted to weaponize it. He was ultimately defeated by Captain America but was teleported to an unknown location. It is unclear if he is still alive.
Senator Stern- Played by Garry Shandling

Senator Stern was a US Senator who always butt heads with Tony Stark. He repeatedly tries to make Stark hand the Iron Man armor over to the government but it did not work. When HYDRA took over SHIELD, he was revealed to be a supporter of HYDRA. He was taken into custody by the government after SHIELD fell and is not presumed to be in prison.
Arnim Zola
Arnim Zola- Played by Toby Jones

Arnim Zola was the right hand man to the Red Skull during WWII. He was taken in by SHIELD and they used him to further their scientific research. He was believed to be dead until Captain America and Black Widow found his brain stored on a computer program. That program has since been destroyed which likely means he is dead as well.
Alexander Pierce- Played by Robert Redford
- Appeared In
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
- Deceased
Alexander Pierce worked his way up the ladder of SHIELD to eventually become the Secretary of the organization. He pushed the development of Project Insight so that HYDRA could use it to their advantage. Nick Fury shot and killed him while taking down HYDRA.
Jasper Sitwell- Played by Maximiliano Hernandez

- Deceased
Jasper Sitwell had been a SHIELD agent for many years and was an undercover agent of HYDRA the entire time. He told Captain America all of HYDRA's plans and secrets before the Winter Soldier found him trying to escape. He was thrown out of a car and killed after being hit by a semi.
