5 Ideas for Agents of SHIELD Spinoff Series

Even though ABC has yet to officially renew Agents of SHIELD for a third season, based on how well the show has been during the second season, it is only a matter of time before it happens.

This season has brought Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki) into the MCU and just re-introduced Deathlok 2.0 (J. August Richards). The show has also been given the task of introducing the Inhumans as well as recently revealing another faction of SHIELD lead by Roberto Gonzalez (Edward James Olmos).

Today, Entertainment Weekly ran an exclusive story where they reported that Marvel is actively developing a spinoff series based on Agents of SHIELD. The untitled spinoff series is being developed by Jeffrey Bell and Paul Zbyszewski, the executive producer and writer of Agents of SHIELD respectively.

Details on the potential series are sparse at this point but this is what we know so far-

  • The series will have its own original pilot
  • The spinoff will use elements from the rest of this season to launch
  • It will debut in either Fall 2015 or during the winter break of Season 3
  • Spinoff has yet to be ordered and it is possible it doesn't happen
Based on those small pieces of information and our knowledge on how this season may end, here are 5 Ideas for the Agents of SHIELD Spinoff Series-
Secret Warriors
Using Agents of SHIELD to create a Secret Warriors spinoff is probably the most logical spinoff idea and one that is being floated around by just about everyone. The Secret Warriors comic run featured a team lead by Nick Fury and had Daisy Johnson (Quake), Yo Yo Rodriguez (Slingshot), Jerry Sledge (Stonewall), and Eden Fesi (Manifold).

I doubt Marvel would be able to convince Samuel L. Jackson to lead a TV show but the other characters involved could certainly be in play. Marvel could instead have Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) lead the Secret Warriors and have Skye/Daisy (Chloe Bennet) be her number 2.

In a world as big as Marvel's there are certainly more super powered people than we know of at this time. Fesi is off the table thanks to his mutant origins but the likes of Rodriguez and Sledge are interesting characters. Rodriguez would give the show a speedster as well as someone from Puerto Rican descent. Sledge is the biological son of The Absorbing Man (Brian Patrick Wade) who appeared earlier in this season of Agents of SHIELD and may return in Daredevil as well.

Round out the team with newly introduced Inhuman Lincoln (Luke Mitchell) and this group could do some serious damage. Hill, Quake, Slingshot, Stonewall, and Lincoln would make a formidable and diverse group that could deal with the lower level super powered people roaming the Earth.

STRIKE
When we learned that Bobbi and Mack were not completely loyal to Coulson and his SHIELD, everyone tried to figure out what the "Real SHIELD" was really about. That is still being played out in the show but one thing is clear, Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) is a true ally of Coulson's and he recently expressed that he wants more responsibility.

Well Hunter, would leading your own super-secret organization be enough for you? In the comic, Hunter is the leader of STRIKE (Special Tactical Reserve for International Key Emergencies). The spinoff would focus on Hunter establishing STRIKE and dealing with the threats outside of the USA, where SHIELD is primarily focused.

We know that Avengers: Age of Ultron will deal with the threat of Ultron all across the globe and once the dust settles from what should be a giant confrontation, there will be more problems than just one team or agency could deal with. Ideally, Hunter would recruit the two other Brits currently on the show and have Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) run the scientific division. The show would also be able to create a few new original characters to broaden the cast.

SWORD
It has been made very clear that the "Real SHIELD" and their leader Gonzalez is not a fan of people with any sorts of powers. He has shown a real dislike Skye and Coulson because of the alien DNA that is floating around in his body. Should the confrontation between these two factions end on good terms, Gonzalez and Coulson could decide upon a truce but then have Gonzalez form SWORD and focus on protecting the Earth from those not from our world.

SWORD (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) would bring Gonzalez over as the leader but making a show based around alien threats and a headquarters in a space station may be difficult. Nevertheless, it would allow them to introduce the likes of Abigail Brand and maybe even Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman).

West Coast Agents
This is really just the foundation for a much larger property and possibly the West Coast Avengers, but we have to start somewhere. Mockingbird is a character whose allegiance is still unclear, even if she says she is with the "Real SHIELD." Giving her a leading role in a spinoff series would be a terrific choice for Marvel and ABC.

Palicki is great actress and could certainly be a leading lady. But why stop there! Bring in Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and let the two fall in love and lead their own group of highly skilled agents under the same SHIELD name as Coulson's team. Renner hinted back in January that he needed to suit up again as Hawkeye for a secret project, so he could already have a cameo coming in Agents of SHEILD.

Renner and Palicki would be a great leading pair and Renner's presence would certainly grab headlines and casual viewers. They could also bring Agent 13 (Emily Van Camp) into the team and maybe even Deathlok, to help beef up the squad. These higher profile characters could certainly help the show get a steady following and crossovers between this series and Agents of SHIELD would have a lot of exciting possibilities.

Super Agents
I'll be the first to admit that there would need to be a different title but basically this show would take the super powered people we know and have them form their own team. This would give Coulson and his team the opportunity to go back to their roots of being more of a spy agency instead of dealing with people with super powers on a weekly basis.

The team could consist of Skye, Deathlok, and Lincoln, plus a few new faces. This spinoff could be interesting because of the lack of a true leader among this group and them having to go through the growing pains of learning to work together.
